From: mgrahm on 8 May 2010 14:37 Hi all My aunt currently has older iMac (must be 11 years old) and we think it has bitten the dust. In any event she is looking to buy a new iMac or maybe a refurbished model from Apple. Problem is that she connects to the internet to read her email a few times a week, so she does use a dial-up connection and these new unit don't have a built in modem. So I am looking for suggestions or recommendations on USB modems. Thanks Michael

Michael- Apple temporarily discontinued their USB external modem, but brought it back because of the demand. You can also find Mac-compatible USB modems from USRobotics and Zoom, but I think the Apple modem is easier to set up. Fred

Some time after the USB modem was first dropped, a local Apple dealer got some more in, and they were available at Best Buy. That was several months ago, so I can't be sure they are still available. Perhaps a dealer can order them as service parts. The USRobotics and Zoom modems work OK. As I recall, the USRobotics modem requires a driver to be installed. Fred |
