I started with a perfectly good computer that had five years of garbage
which slowed it down so I scheduled some time for a reformat and
reinstall of software. Gateway 2.4 Pentium with 1 gig of RAM. Was
running WinXP with all service packs and Explorer 8.

Reformated and reloaded WinXP from the original OEM disk. ALL GREAT!
Reloaded some programs ALL GREAT! Enabled Win auto update and it loaded
several small updates ALL GREAT! System then wanted to load SP2 and I
proceeded to download. ALL BAD! System will continually LOOP with auto
reboot enabled. It will go to SAFE mode and allow input.
ERROR CODES: 0X0000007E , (0XC0000005, 0XF81CB604, 0XF8984DE0,
0XF8984ADC)

I have done the following (several times) with NO success.

Reformatted, reloaded WINXP, LOADED SP1A (auto update never attempted
to load SP1A so I had to load manually from Microsoft). Reloaded SP2
(several times). RESTORED several times to point prior to SP2 install.
Disabled sound drivers. Ran MSCONFIG (changed parameters) and attempted
several reboots without success. UPGRADED my BIOS per support FAQ at
Gateway support. Deactivated sound drivers and some multi-media
drivers.

I will welcome ideas before I get really upset with the system! SEVEN
hours later and I am not any closer to success. This system worked
before with SP2 but NOT at the present time.

Get SP1a on.
Download and install SP3.

Done.

I would not bother with sp2 I'd go for SP3

Sp1 is needed to install it (but not sp2)

More detail:

- Disconnect the computer from *any* way of connecting to the Internet,
physically. Leave it that way for the duration.
- Clean install of Windows XP (assuming with no service packs given what you
have.)
- Update all hardware device drivers (software) to the latest versions
available from the hardware manufacturer(s). Especially pay attention to
the motherboard/mainboard chipset drivers, the hard drive controller drivers
(if not part of the motherboard chipset for whatever reason), the video
device drivers, the audio device drivers and any/all network device(s)
drivers. Go stratight to the manufacturer(s) web page(s).
- Install SP2 from external media/prior download. Yes - straight to SP2.
- Reboot at least 2 times afterwards, waiting a few minutes each time for
the machine to 'settle'.
- Install SP3 from external media/prior download.
- Reboot at least 2 times afterwards, waiting a few minutes each time for
the machine to 'settle'.
- Verify the Windows Firewall is enabled - for now - allow *no exceptions*.
- Reconnect physically and otherwise the ability for the computer to get on
the Internet.

Once connected to the Internet - visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and install whatever it might need to get you to a screen asking you if you
want EXPRESS or CUSTOM and *choose CUSTOM*.

Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Rebooting as needed.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or
"Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to
install Internet Explorer 8 at this time. Get Internet Explorer 7, however.

Some have trouble finding the downloads for SP1a, SP2 and SP3 they might
need...

Clarification/spelling remedy:
<spelling correction>
Go stratight to the manufacturer(s) web page(s). --> Go straight to the
manufacturer(s) web page(s).
</spelling correction>

<clarification>
Go straight to the manufacturer(s) web page(s). --> Go straight to the
manufacturer(s) web page(s) on another machine and get the latest drivers
downloaded/on external media to transfer to the 'off the internet' machine.
</clarification>
