Apparently, 'Remove Remote Desktop Wallpaper' is one of the new Group Policy
elements in Win2008. :-)

Subject: RWW and wallpaper/desktop
I am trying to determine how to disable the displaying of the remote
computer's wallpaper/desktop when using RWW to connect to desktops at the
office. As well as other ideas in trying to conserve banwidth and cut-down on
repaints of the screen.

I assume it involves an edit of TSWEB.ASPX, but can't find any information
to confirm this or describe how to accomplish it. It would be good to know
all of the possible changes that might be applied universally in the
TSWEB.ASPX for customizing a user's experience.

Is it as simple as editing "const TS_PERF_DISABLE_WALLPAPER = &h00000001" to
be "const TS_PERF_DISABLE_WALLPAPER = &h00000000" or is there some code
needed to use this constant? I am not a programmer, but am proficient at
copy, paste and edit when I have a clue or two.

Hi Bill,

If this is SBS 2003 ... when you get the logon screen to RWW, select a slow
connection (say, 56k modem). This has the same effect as deselecting
bandwidth hogging options in RDP connection properties.

Look into TS Gateway. I think you should be able to configure a connection
and then distribute it to users (much like the VPN connection in SBS 2k3).

TS Gateway would use the SBS to connect, but you don't go via RWW. Rather,
you'd go directly to the workstation. This is an RDP connection, using the
SBS as the gateway. With the RDP, you of course those additional options so
far as bandwidth preservation.

Les, I appreciate your response but it does not solve my problem. I have a
very unsophisticated user base and I don't won't to introduce a whole new
layer of problems to my situation.

What I want to be able to do is use RWW to work the way it is supposed to
work, which means to instruct it not to send wallpaper/desktop info to the
remote computer. This use to be a check box under RWW for SBS 2003, I just
need to know how it works in SBS 2008. I know the feature is there, probably
an edit to the TWWEB.ASPX file on the server, as that is the way you tell it
to allow the user to make the remote computer's disk drives available/visible
to the RWW connection, I just need to know how to do it. Can you help me, or
get someone to help me? Thanks!

I going to go out on a limb here and say that I suspect you'll need to do it
with a group policy. I think the following is the one you'll need to
create:

Start | Administrative Tools | Group Policy Management | Forest | Domains |
<yourdomain<.local | My Business | Computers | <rt. click> SBSComputers |
Create a GPO in this domain and link it here... | Name: Remove RDP Desktop
Wallpaper | OK

<rt. click> Remove RDP Desktop Wallpaper | Edit | User Configuration |
Policies | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Terminal Services
Desktop Wallpaper | Properties | Enable | Apply | OK

From a command prompt: gpupdate /force

Reboot a workstation (in Windows 2003 it sometimes took 2-3 reboots to get a
policy update to apply; not sure about Windows 2008)

Have a remote user login to test the new group policy.
