From: John on 15 Apr 2010 21:33 I would like to remove a Vista client from an SBS 2008 domain and turn off Offline Files. The data contained on this PC is important so I want to take care that I do this properly (though it is backed up, I just don't want to waste any time). How should I remove it from the domain while retaining all the files on the local PC? John
From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on 16 Apr 2010 07:46 Hi John: Since the crux of your ask it that the data be kept safe, I would copy that data to a known location... folder on the station, folder on the SBS, folder on a usb drive/key or all of the above, and make sure it is accessable from somewhere else. Then you can unplug the patch cord and boot off the LAN and verify the data is on that station, then maybe copy it out again. Disjoin from the domain will not remove any user data, but you will have to be a local administrator to logon to that station once you have disjoined, so practice that before you disjoin. You can do that by logging on to the local pc instead of the domain with the *local* administrators user name and password. Once the system has been unplugged, you can, if you are paraniod like me about critical data, copy it out of the users shared folder yet again, then remove the computer account (and user account if necessary) with Server Management. - Larry Please post the resolution to your issue so others may benefit - Get Your SBS Health Check at www.sbsbpa.com > I would like to remove a Vista client from an SBS 2008 domain and turn > off Offline Files. Yes, for the most part... the method of backing up the files, then removing from the domain worked. But, there were some hidden folders that I didn't copy that still exist. Mostly non-issues, except for some virtualization stuff for VirtualBox. I've got those backed up as well. So not really an issue. Thank you for your suggestion. It is nice to feel more confident before trying something like this. |
