From: cpshah99 on 24 Nov 2009 11:15 Hi All Does anybody have used the following book? Underwater Acoustics: A Linear Systems Theory Approach by Lawrence J. Ziomek. Is it worth buying it??? Many thanks. Chintan

That's a bit too much paper to shift in a hurry, so I am writing off, what, decades-old memory. You have been warned! Ziomek's book did, as I recall, contain some material of 2D and 3D array processing I can't remember to have seen anywhere else, so one can defend buying the book for containing unique material. The main structure of the book, though, was as two or three main parts: One on the acoustic wave equation, one on the oceanic wave guide (my memory might be flawed; these might have been one section), and one section on array signal processing. I was a bit disappointed at the time I read the book, as it mostly - with the exception of the 2D and 3D arrays - contained material that was both found and covered better elsewhere. But as always, if you have both the space in your bookshelf and the cash to spare (and can find a copy in decent state), by all means buy it. There is always the chance that a book by an unfamiliar author contains that remarkable phrase or perspective that provides you with new insights into ought-to-be-familiar material. Rune

You have been warned! ...and the warning should be heeded! It turned out that the Ziomek book I reviewed was a different one than the one you asked about. Rune

There are so few books that address this topic and one gem is worth the price regardless if the rest of the book is helpful. You really can't have too many (technical) books. You might also want to look at some slightly off topic books that address some of the same issues. For example, books on array processing or acoustics. Al Clark www.danvillesignal.com

I have seen some really good book in my uni library. The author is Rober Urick. A really good book. Very few copies are availabele and they are expensive. The one I mentioned earlier, I think I can afford it. But please do recommend some of the books on this topic that is Underwater Acoustics. Many thanlks. Chintan |
