From: Kknight78 on 6 May 2010 09:58 I've searched extensively and can only find solutions for fixing this error from the sending side, but in my case it is a receiving side error. This problem just started a couple of days ago "out of the blue" on a server that has been working without incident for years. So far, I've tried: 1) rebooting the SonicWall appliance between the server and the internet, 2) restarting the server, 3) adding and prioritizing the OpenDNS servers to the DNS server list just in case it was a DNS problem on the exchange server. I've got an SBS 2003 server running Exchange 2003 that is bouncing e-mails from numerous locations with the error 554 5.7.1 Relay access denied. What is really strange is that if the sender(s) tries to send a second time, it comes right through. Just to repeat, this problem is happening with multiple senders that are all from diverse domains, so it is a problem on our side (the receiving side), not a problem with the sender. Details of error messages follow, please let me know if I need to supply more or different information. Here is an example bounce message from an external sender (I've replaced the real domain name with problemdomain.com): This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you have sent could not be delivered to one or more recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address failed: <craig(a)problemdomain.com >: 554 5.7.1 <craig(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied Here is a more verbose example where invoices are being sent through Quickbooks (located on the same server): From: qb-billpay-errors(a)billpay.ctcfe.quickbooks.com [mailto:qb-billpay-errors(a)billpay.ctcfe.quickbooks.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 9:03 AM To: accounting(a)problemdomain.com Subject: Returned mail: see transcript for details from sdm.qbn.sdg.ie.intuit.com [10.21.6.52] X-RedirectStatus: RedirectBounce Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <johnny(a)problemdomain.com > (reason: 554 5.7.1 <johnny(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied) <craig(a)problemdomain.com > (reason: 554 5.7.1 <craig(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied) <matt(a)problemdomain.com > (reason: 554 5.7.1 <matt(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied) <rhonda(a)problemdomain.com > (reason: 554 5.7.1 <rhonda(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- .... while talking to problemdomain.com.inbound15.mxlogicmx.net.problemdomain.com.: >>> DATA <<< 554 5.7.1 <rhonda(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable <<< 554 5.7.1 <matt(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable <<< 554 5.7.1 <craig(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable <<< 554 5.7.1 <johnny(a)problemdomain.com >: Relay access denied 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable <<< 554 5.5.1 Error: no valid recipients ----- Original message follows ----- Return-Path: <qb-billpay-errors(a)billpay.ctcfe.quickbooks.com > Received: from imsap05.sdg.ie.intuit.com (sdm.qbn.sdg.ie.intuit.com [10.21.6.52]) by sdm.ctcfe.quickbooks.com (8.13.8+Sun/8.13.6) with SMTP id o45F2SJn020622; Wed, 5 May 2010 08:02:28 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 5 May 2010 08:02:28 -0700 (PDT) From: "Company Name" <accounting(a)problemdomain.com> Reply-To: "Company Name" <accounting(a)problemdomain.com> To: 17193823228(a)efaxsend.com Cc: rrabito(a)ffc8.org Message-ID: <9947675.5232041273071748078.JavaMail.root(a)imsap05.sdg.ie.intuit.com> Subject: Invoice from Company Name Errors-To: qb-billpay-errors(a)billpay.ctcfe.quickbooks.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="----=_Part_1023011_28300352.1273071748072" X-AlternateEmail: johnny(a)problemdomain.com X-MessageID: 496070106 X-RedirectStatus: InitialAttempt ------=_Part_1023011_28300352.1273071748072 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_Part_1023010_29096033.1273071748072" ------=_Part_1023010_29096033.1273071748072 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

All report OK except CSMA, INTERSIL, NERD, NETHERUNSURE, and SPAMRBL which all report TIMEOUT. Even if the domain were on a blacklist though, wouldn't that only affect our ability to send e-mail? It shouldn't cause us to bounce incoming e-mail, should it? Ron

Is it just fowarding SMTP to the SBS, or does it do any SMTP inspection? Are you using the IMF? If so, can you briefly explain how you have it setup? Any Event log errors?
