From: Les Connor [SBS MVP] on 8 Oct 2009 20:48 Good stuff, Jim. Larry Struckmeyer informs me it should work fine without any trick - but the onsite person may need access to the server to 'safely remove' drives on rotation. -- ----------------------------------------------- Les Connor [SBS MVP] "Jim" <jim(a)nospam.com> wrote in message news:h2psc5hlkvhctc5onpv7ij377u6j6s05l9(a)4ax.com... > On Thu, 08 Oct 2009 15:29:15 -0400, RobWW <RobWW(a)gmail.com> wrote: > >>Can I use the SBS 2003 backup wizard with USB drives, create a 5-day >>schedule and then rotate out two drives every other day? >> >>Thanks > > > We alternate three USB drives, and have done so for a couple years. > We've recently replaced the 500GB drives with 1TB drives. > > As Les said, SBS loses track and gets confused. From: HHarvey on 8 Oct 2009 23:08 Iomega Rev Drive 120 Gig share it then map it to a drive letter. Then just pop in a new removable each day -- Harry Harvey "RobWW" wrote: > Can I use the SBS 2003 backup wizard with USB drives, create a 5-day > schedule and then rotate out two drives every other day? > > Thanks >

We have them set using the "optimise for removal" as opposed to "optimise for performance" option (which I imagine just flushes the cache). Also, when we use Seagate FreeAgent drives we disable the sleep timer. On some sites we've got away with using Western Digital Passport. They're 2.5" drives and USB bus-powered. The girl whose job it is to take the drives home each night loves it, as it fits in her handbag! On other sites we've had to use powered drives as the USB bus seems a little bit light on juice. Jim

I run it standard on all my customers with SBS. 1. Buy two drives and the caddy device and an ESATA card all from high- rely.com 2. Load their drive mapping software and force windows to remember the drive mappings and disk serial numbers. 3. Each drive has a key that shuts down the drive safely to swap out. 4. Works with USB too but ESATA is 3x to 4x faster and only $100 for the card. 5. SBS doesn't even notice or care, it writes to whatever drive is there and whatever interval you want. 6 . If you positively have to have a 5-day backup buy the high- rely.com two-bay and robocopy over the data each morning to the new drive when they bring the off-site drive back. Hope this helps Chuck
