From: newguy on 19 May 2010 11:11 I have a client that is getting close to end of life on their server (hardware and some apps they have) They have a 2003 SBS running Exchange and file server. They want to go to a 2008 SBS. Can someone tell me how that can be done? They will be getting a new server as well. I was told that i have to recreate everything because it's a SBS. Please please someone tell me i have other options.
From: SteveB on 19 May 2010 11:31 You can't upgrade SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 because 2008 is 64 bit. There are several migration methods available from both Microsoft and third parties. Have you installed SBS 2008 at all yet for yourself or any clients? If not I suggest you do it at least 3 times on a test system and even try a test migration of SBS 2003. You definitely want to acquire at least one book about SBS 2008 as a reference. I sense you have a lot of learning to do here. Please please someone tell me i have other options. Your information source is incorrect, but the migration process is involved and needs attention to detail and preperations. Check for and get the latest version of the MS migration document; http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sbs-2008-2003-migration(WS.10).aspx or utilize third part migration tools and support such as www.sbsmigration.com -- /kj
