From: wadeleakey on 27 Jun 2005 10:26 Have been successfully using Backup wizard but about the time SP1 installed, the wizard reported unsuccessful. I am troubleshooting using NTBackup.exe in advanced mode. My repeatable symptom is this: When just backing up a few closed data files the "Backup progress" window shows activity that seems to be a complete backup but is finishes with "The backup could not be completed due to an error." "To see detailed information, click report" The report shows what seems to be a successful backup. No error indicated and the backup seems to have finished. However, if verify was selected, the report does not show any indication of even starting a verify job. The application event log shows erroras follows: Source: Ntbackup Event ID 8019 This error links to Article ID: 820852. This article does not apply since I get this problem when backing up just a few files, no system state or exchange. The only other clue is that occasionally a backup attempt faile due to timeout of NtFrs service. This is not predictable. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. wade
From: MSFT) on 28 Jun 2005 01:28 Hi Wade, Thanks for your post. First of all, please install the following hotfix and see if there is any change. "Error on a Request to Write Data to Media" Error Message When You Use Ntbackup.exe http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817688 If the issue still persists, please help me collect the following information: 1. Where are you backup the files to? Does the issue happen if you backup to the local disc? 2. If you create a new TXT file and then backup only this TXT file, will the issue persist? 3. Please post the backup log in the newsgroup. The Backupxx.log files are in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data'. 4. Disable any anti-virus software on the server and backup again, are there any change? If you have any questions please do not hesitate to let me know. I am glad to be of assistance. From: wadeleakey on 28 Jun 2005 11:10 Hi Jerry, Thanks for your rapid response and new ideas. I started to install the hot fix you mentioned but got concerned by the warnings with it. I do not have the specific symptom it describes. The instructions do say that the tested solution for this problem will be included in the then future service pak. I have the service pak installed. Please stay with me as I get the other information and do the tests you suggested. From: wadeleakey on 4 Jul 2005 10:34 Hi Jerry, I acquired the hotfix you suggested but it would not install. I got a message that the files allready installed were newer that the the ones in the fix and so the fix was not needed. It would not install. The info you requested is this: Backup is to a 4mm DDS tape. Problem does not happen when backup is to a file on the local disk. I created a .txt file and backed up only it and it worked fine. No antivirus software on this machine. Here is a backup log: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: 4mm DDS Media name: "Media created 6/28/2005 at 11:00 PM" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
