From: sdmusicmaker on 30 Apr 2010 16:49 Question: I have a Windows 2003 server in a domain. It is just a member server curently. The DC of this domain is a SBS 2000 machine. The SBS machine needs to be retired and we want to make the existing Windows server 2003 machine the new DC. How do we move the domain from the SBS2000 server to the exisitng Windows server 2003 so when we turn off the SBS server the domain is up and running on the Windows 2003 Server? 1. Is this possible/advisable? 2. What would the steps be? Thanks, SD
From: Cliff Galiher - MVP on 30 Apr 2010 17:07 Are you using any of the SBS features on SBS 2000? Exchange etc? If so then you'll need to plan on getting replacement technologies in place. There are a lot of variables in a migration and your brief question leaves too many unanswered questions to get more specific. -Cliff "sdmusicmaker" <sdmusicmaker(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:297CC2B2-7C1D-48CA-B02D-424A921B3FD4(a)microsoft.com... > Question: > > I have a Windows 2003 server in a domain. From: Charlie Russel - MVP on 1 May 2010 13:31 If you are ONLY concerned about moving the Active Directory, then it's fairly simple. Run DCPromo on the Windows Server 2003 box, making it a domain controller. Make sure it is also a global catalog server! Now, let everything replicate (and be SURE it has.) Disconnect the SBS box and then seize the FSMO roles (giyf for details). You're done. Of course, in the process, you've broken every end user's shortcuts, lost your printers, lost your shared folders, lost exchange if you were using it, etc., etc. So as Cliff says, we need a lot more information and you need a lot more questions before you're ready to do any such thing. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/russel "sdmusicmaker" <sdmusicmaker(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:297CC2B2-7C1D-48CA-B02D-424A921B3FD4(a)microsoft.com... > Question: > > I have a Windows 2003 server in a domain. From: sdmusicmaker on 3 May 2010 15:55 First, thanks you guys for helping me with this. The purpose is to turn off the SBS2000 server for ggod which means that they would now log into the new Windows 2003 Server that now contains all the group policy stuff and AD stuff. They do not use Exchange. We have migrated files to the new server and they have mapped drives to them. Their printers are shared off the new server. What else do you need to know? I will be more than happy to flush out more detials so this is successful. In a successful scenario, we power down the old SBS2000 box for good and they now log into the domain on the Windows Server 2003 box and life is good. Question on the DCpromo thing, dont you need need to have the SBS on a 2003 schema? We want the final domain to be a Windows 2003 domain. If you are going to a 2003 x86 maching, use the 2003 DVD on the 2000 machine and run adprep. After schema upgrade, proceed to dcpromo your new 2003 DC. > > "Charlie Russel - MVP" wrote: > >> If you are ONLY concerned about moving the Active Directory, then >> it's fairly simple.
