Thanks for that, just checked:

$ cat /etc/profile.d/linux.sh

#!/bin/sh
# Put the Linux directory first in the path so that we can replace lpr
PATH=/usr/local/linuxprinter/bin:$PATH
export PATH

$ which lpr
/usr/local/linuxprinter/bin/lpr

$ ldd `which lpr`

chmod'ing the relevant profile.d files (linux.*) stops that.

That appears to be config info for the ppmtospl2 filter. There's an
executable called cfggen on the CD that seems to generate these files,
but no details on how to use it, just running it produces a file but it
doesn't contain the same amount of information as the actual
linuxprint.cfg file generated by the setup program (see end of post for
my copy).

Print quality is fine. From clicking the 'Print test page' button on
CUPS web interface; 5 sec for status light to start flashing, 15 sec for
printer to start working, 20 secs for page to finish. Bit noisy, but not
especially so.

Notice however that if you print several pages the subsequent pages will
print much faster (Samsung announces 16 ppm and this is more or less
correct).

Good to hear.

I'm really looking forward to getting one, since most of my prints will
be docs anyway. The toner lasts for how many pages though (if anyone's
run through one already)?

Had mine for a year and still one the same toner cartridge. Don't buy a new
cartridge though, they cost more than the printer. You can get a refiller
kit for about ?15 on line. The cartridge has a nice convenient bung in the
side for refilling.
