Set to default max resolution, display windows stop right at the top of
the dock which is at the bottom of the screen. No mater what, I can't
pull them below the top of the dock.

What I'm trying to do is have that same effect at a lower resolution so
I can easily read the screen-- without having to hit a key combination
or do something else for each new screen-- or have the dock hidden.

Most programs remember their window size, so you just have to do it the
first time for each app.
