From: Bob Lucas on 13 May 2010 04:08 Were OE or Windows Live Mail open, when I installed KB978542 on the laptop? - Not sure, so the answer is a definite Maybe. I am pretty sure that OE and WLMail were not open on the desktop, so you have probably identified a likely cause. For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed, before I allow Windows Update to install updates. I will also close IE8, if it doesn't prevent the Windows Update from installing. From: Jo-Anne on 13 May 2010 13:18 I close all programs before doing any updates (I'm configured to be notified; I go to Microsoft Update myself). I have three computers running WinXP fully updated. Here's what happened with the latest update: desktop computer, XP Home, needed to restart laptop computer, XP Pro, needed to restart netbook, XP Home, didn't need to restart Jo-Anne "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP(a)gmail.com> wrote in message news:OszfF5h8KHA.5900(a)TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > If you'd closed OE before installing the update, a reboot wouldn't be > required. > > spamlet wrote: >> Cheers: >> >> Now all I need is a way to stop it telling me I need to restart my >> computer >> every 5 minutes! >> ;-) >> >> S >> >> >> "Richard in AZ" <me(a)mailinator.com> wrote in message >> news:%23JIOIEe8KHA.5848(a)TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >>> It was part of the last automatic windows update package >>> >>> "spamlet" <spam.morespam(a)invalid.invalid> wrote in message >>> news:eO7ro2c8KHA.1560(a)TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >>>> And is this in with our automatic updates or do we have to get it >>>> ourselves? >>>> >>>> S >>>> >>>> >>>> "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <PABearMVP(a)gmail.com> wrote in message >>>> news:Ob%238aCX8KHA.5476(a)TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >>>>> [crossposted to OE General & OE6 newsgroups as an FYI] >>>>> >>>>> MS10-030: Vulnerability in Outlook Express...could allow remote code >>>>> execution: >>>>> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978542 >

This is all missing the point that Windows tells you that you can go on working while the update is being performed: it does not say 'oh but you mustn't use x y or z.'
