If I wanted to run a newsgroup server on my SBS box (or on a separate box
come to that), any recommendations as to what software I should look at? I
know Microsoft no longer have any offerings in this area, so I wondered
whether anyone has any experiences running a newsgroup server on SBS2008 or
Standard server 2008?

TIA.

A quick Google turns up no obvious candidates, other than old Windows
Server/Exchange versions.

Presumably if you also used Linux you wouldn't bother to ask, so that's
not going an option, but I'm afraid that would be my recommendation.
Either leafnode or sn on a virtualised (or fairly low-resource old
machine) Debian Lenny should do the job most efficiently with least
fuss. I did run leafnode for a while, but it was a few years ago so I
don't recall much about it. But I don't recall there being much to it,
either, other than providing quite a bit of storage space, even for
text-only groups.

A quick Scroogle shows that NNTP Server software for Windows is a
fairly rare beast.

There are a number of implementations that have fallen by the wayside,
and the links that I can find all lead to dead ends.

The only offering I found that's still live is this:
http://www.messagepixels.com/

A presumed obsolete one that I found that's at least still available
(and has source) is this:
http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d7xananewz2.htm

Of course, the other pertinent question is what you'd want to run your
own NNTP Server for?

Hi Joe. Thank you for the recommendation. I don't want to learn Linux at the
moment (but yes, I do gather its not difficult these days). If I can't turn
anything else up then I may have to go that route.

Yes, that was my conclusion too.

This is useful link. As a software developer seeing how someone has
implemented NNTP will be very useful.

Eventually I would like to run a combined forum & nntp group for one of the
websites I look after, but in the short term just an NNTP server for
customers as a discussion area. I find NNTP so much better than a forum,
although I will admit that the NNTP bridge to the Microsoft forums isn't a
bad offering. At the moment though I'm just exploring options, and it might
be simplest (although less useful) just to go for a web-based forum.
