Ah, that crossed my mind after sending my last message ... however, the other machines wake up from 'off' [1] so I know it is possible in some cases. If it were a PC I'd be looking in the BIOS at this point. Cheers, T i m [1] Except the off where they are switched off at the wall <doh>, as I just had when testing to confirm I could still wake up the other machines when this Mini wouldn't (the Mrs turns her PC off at the multiway adaptor). ;-)

This I think is the gotcha. Macs in general don't do Wake on LAN from power off, rather just from sleep. I'm not sure what XP makes of sleeping, but I'm guessing that T i m means from power off? Kind regards, Dave

OK, well it's good to know that I've not missed summat. > >I'm not sure what XP makes of sleeping, but I'm guessing that T i m >means from power off? I did indeed ... On the box I'm currently testing as a home server it draws 60W when running, 40 on standby and 2 when off (so obviously not 'off' as such). It in turn can wake (and sleep) 'off' machines (and how we generally leave them when not using them for a while) to run a backup. I guess if I measure the power consumption on the Mini in it's various 'not on' states and see how it fares there might be an alternative option. Cheers, T i m

So, off it consumes no power (rare these days) running / idle about 21W and with an external USB powered drive attached, about 26W. Sooo, say I was to press the C2D Mini into action as a Mini WHS (the irony <g>) I would have to buy a 500G drive to replace the 60G one and probably either a FW or USB self powered drive externally. The problem is I'd have to buy said drives (not cheap) and tie up a Mini doing something I'm not sure it was designed for nor the best use of it from an asset realisation POV (ie I could sell it and use it to pay the difference it would make to the electric bill over the next 20 years). The old Asus / AMD box was free, has 4 x SATA2 internal and an eSATA2 connector and will take the 3 x 500G Samsung drives I happen to have spare. The money I save on hardware I can put in the lekky meter (and it all helps to keep the place warm). ;-) Cheers, T i m p.s. And I can now leave this Mini on Standby so the WHS can wake it up for a backup. p.p.s. M$ do a remote console connector thingy for Mac that I've now tried and seems to work ok. |
