Is there a shortcut to put the phone into a silent mode (as is say on my
K810i I used on Orange) or is the only way to do it through Menu/
Settings/Profiles? Are there other possible useful shortcuts I should know
about which are not easy to discover?

Have you tried pushing and holding the # key?

I have tried that now. It changes - between Normal and Vibrate -:(
