From: ckramer7070 on 17 Dec 2007 09:59 I am experiencing a problem with a handfull of clients on our domain: Group Policy is not getting applied to about 5 clients out of 20 on our domain, I would like to know if the settings in the TCP/IP section for each client should be set to "Obtain DNS automatically" or should I specify the actual DC of the Domain? I'm hoping it is really this simple to fix - but I doubt it, after many other troubleshooting steps this is the only one I have not found many posts on. We are on a SBS 2003 server, all clients are XP -SP2 and updated. I think this may have something to do with the previous configuration of our NT server, these 5 clients were migrated over after after the NT server was demoted. I'm not sure if this was done correctly (consultants project), and unfortunately these clients cannot be reset at this time. The event ID pertaining to this issue is: 1054/Userenv. I did search through EventID.net and have not yet found a solution that works. Thanks for any input, Chad

On each client, run ipconfig /all to verify. Run gpupdate /force Run rsop.msc to check for errors & report back Download & install the user profile hive cleanup (UPHC) service on all your workstations.
From: ckramer7070 on 17 Dec 2007 12:23 Thanks, Yes the SBS box is the DHCP. All clients are connected to the server and are receiving an IP. I have run rsop.msc on the clients in question, the error report shows Group Policy cannot be applied (cannot find the domain controller) - after forcing the GP and logging the clients OFF/ON the errors are cleared. This scenario helps in the short-term but these clients never end up with the GP sticking after a week or two - could be due to reboots from updates. I have not tried using the UPHC clean up yet - I will apply this to the problem computers and let you know how it works out. Thanks, Chad

From: ckramer7070 on 17 Dec 2007 12:58 Yes, all the workstations are on the same unit. I have tested the UPHC on one of the problematic clients - it did not resolve the GP issue. This particular client is wireless and will not get GP applied no matter what I try (forcing - gpupdate) most others (not wireless) will apply after a force but won't stick for long. Here is the error info from rsop: Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below. The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other components Anything else I could try? I have run network test utilities and changed the time to apply the GPO's but neither has lead me to a solution. Thanks again, Chad
