Is is just me of is it odd that Apple has put all the ports on the left
hand side of the Macbook Pros (at least on the 13 inch model I have)? OK
for left handers of course but as right hander it's awkward plugging
USBs in and a wired mouse.

Sounds like a workaround for the internal layout. Anne's 15" MBP has the
CD/DVD drive on the right, so it probably makes sense to put the ports
on the left.

Yep, and because of the size, there isn't really room to route a USB
port on the right anywhere. Most USB leads now reach without an issue.
Early 'pro' mice had a short lead which wouldn't reach the iBooks left
port for right handers, but they extended it later on so it'd reach the
left ports fine.

I've got Logitech & MS mice with stupid long wires which means the left
port isn't an issue.

Well, my take is that the optical drive is likely to be used far less
than the ports. I've never used it at all on mine. But obviously I use
the power lead and the ports all the time and it is more of a fiddle for
right handers.

Apart from power (which is convenient the side it is for me, but I would
imagine in general doesn't matter), I use the optical drive only
slightly less than I use the ports, and due to the way I put the laptop
on the sofa, it is far more convenient to plug in usb sticks in on the
left (for the same reason as the power). I don't use an external drive
often, so that isn't much of an issue, and I have never used the
firewire or the .. umm.. whatever that slot is!
