From: Kue2 on 26 Jan 2009 10:51 I put the computer to sleep about an hour & forth-five minutes ago.........I was having a snooze on the bed. I woke up & was lying in bed, when I saw the computer come out of sleep mode on it's own & it went to the desktop. This is where it gets really weird. After sitting at the desktop for about a minute the next thing I knew the computer re-booted all by itself It booted to the menu then carried on. It ended up at "start windows normally" the f-8 screen. I got out of bed & hit the enter key. Win7 then booted to the desktop....................what do you make of that? I ran powercfg -devicequery wake_armed nothing shows up? Is my computer being taken over? What's my next trouble shooting step? perhaps exorcism? Got any ideas ???? on this one?
From: Carlos on 26 Jan 2009 11:58 Hugh, Sudden reboots obey to many different causes. It might be a power supply operating at its limit which is shutting down for protection (I had one of those!), or overheating. Graphic card temperature can be monitored by freeware GPU-Z (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/) Cannot recall right now if it checks CPU temp also. If sudden reboots keep coming in Win 7, check booting into Vista and see if they disappear. If everything else fails you will have to go through the usual drill of reseating memory sticks, running memtest, etc., etc., etc. Carlos "Kue2" wrote: > I put the computer to sleep about an hour & forth-five minutes ago.........I > was having a snooze on the bed. > I woke up & was lying in bed, when I saw the computer come out of sleep mode > on it's own & it went to the desktop. > This is where it gets really weird. From: "Bill" eschol1948 AT Gmail DOT COM FIX on 26 Jan 2009 12:08 Do you have "automatically reboot" set for system failure in system properties? (Right click Computer, Properties, Advanced System Properties, Advanced, Start up and Recovery, Settings) It is the default setting. So, unless you changed it, you most likely had a system failure and it automatically rebooted. No telling what brought it out of sleep though, could have been anything from a voltage spike to a hacker. Check the event log for the time it happened and see if you see anything unusual. Check the router log, if it is connected to a router, for anything unusual. Any events set to run on a schedule such as defrag? Connected to a WHS and you checked Wake this Computer for backup? And no, don't think you need an exorcism, something woke it up, then caused a system failure, which caused the reboot.
