You don't need to manage the tradeoffs that required it anymore. The CPU slows up and speeds down as needed, for instance. The MacBook switches between specific battery and power adapter setting sets, but there's little in there you'd ever want to tune based on your expected usage.

The explanation is that it was used by accident (and confused users) more often than it was ever used on purpose. Something that's true for me personally at least.
