iDVD is _not_ part of Snow Leopard. For that matter, it wasn't part of
Leopard, Tiger, or Panther, either. I can't remember what the situation
was for Jaguar and earlier. Anyway, it _is_ included with all new Macs,
along with the other current iLife apps (iMovie, iPhoto, iWeb and
GarageBand). iDVD 7, part of iLife '09, _should_ be in your Applications
folder. Whichever version you had on the old Mac wasn't migrated.

There's no Printer Setup anymore, and the one from your old Mac wasn't
migrated - it wouldn't work anyway.

Get iLife <http://www.apple.com/ilife/>.

90% myth, 5% incomprehensible, 5% good advice. American evangelicals
have decided to ignore the good advice and make the belief in myths the
key to salvation.

It doesn't matter. No one outside those in attendance sees what's going
on. Some do it with wine, others kill ovines. It's all OK, because none
of it means anything.

Of course not! What a silly question!

Defend the faith against whom? Rational thinkers make up no more than
about 20% of the American population, so reality is no threat to
anyone's superstitions. I think "be able to defend the faith" is a
cryptonym for "ram your beliefs down everyone's throats." It won't
work. The percentage of rational thinkers is holding steady, if not
increasing.

Your new MacBook should come with iLife '09.

You mean "icon", and no, it didn't change. Nor have the icons of most
applications included with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger (e.g. Mail is
still the same icon, but can be blown up to a higher level of detail).

iMovie's icon and name changed because Apple completely rewrote the
application with iMovie '08. (The '09 edition is the second generation
of the new version.) The new iMovie has a significantly different user
interface and workflow from the older versions.

You have iMovie HD as well, because the migration process regards that
as a separate application and it was copied from your iBook. Some people
prefer to continue using iMovie HD, so Apple allowed that.

Other parts of iLife (such as iPhoto) have undergone a fair degree of
change but not as significant as iMovie.

Apple used to sell an external modem as all Macs introduced starting in
2006 or later no longer have a built-in modem. The external modem was
discontinued a few months ago, but you might be able to find some by
hunting around. I think it was US$49.95.

A third party modem may be an option, but I'm not familiar enough with
specific models.

If you only need a modem for faxing, not for dial-up Internet access,
one option might be a multifunction printer/scanner with built-in fax.

Another option would be to start using an online service which converts
e-mail to fax (and vice versa). I've never investigated them as I almost
never need faxes these days.

> I saw one on ebay for $15 and I wonder if its compatible with SL.

Apple's "External USB Modem" is compatible with Snow Leopard. (Except
for a special case which won't apply to your MacBook.)

Other brands of modems might not be supported directly without a
suitable modem script.

> I will also need a replacement for Photoshop for the time being. Perhaps

How heavily were you using Photoshop? If it was just for basic stuff,
then Photoshop Elements might suffice. Pixelmator could also be worth a
try.

> Also whatever happened to the Num Lock key?

Apple removed the embedded numeric keypad from their laptop keyboards
around early 2008, along with making some other changes like the layout
of the special actions on the function keys, and replacing the Enter key
with a right Option key.

I was lucky enough to get a MacBook Pro before that particular change.
If I got a more recent laptop I would be missing that Enter key, but
there is a software solution: "keyremap4macbook" lets you redefine keys,
and that could be used to reinstate the Enter key in place of Right
Option. Despite the name, it works with any Mac model (possibly only
those with Intel processors).

Yes, they are. The fact that you didn't refer to iMovie in your post led
me to believe that it wasn't part of the discussion.

No, Apple didn't change the icon, nor did they change it for Mail,
Safari, and plenty of other apps.

However, you said in your post that iDVD is missing from Snow Leopard
and the one from your old Mac did not transfer. Now you're saying you
_DO_ have iDVD installed.
