1 pass or 7 passes or 35 passes, depending.

35 passes takes `forever' on files of many gigabytes.

Quite. So if the files that Conor was erasing were, say, VM (Virtual
Machine) files then it could easily take several hours to secure-erase
them.

If Windows is doing it quicker -on the same size files- then it's doing
it less securely. At a guess.

Disc speed is the limiting factor. The host OS isn't going to make a
lot of difference.
