Not familiar with Fences, but would using multiple desktops work for
you? That's usually configured by default in most desktop Linux installs.

I think you've already gotten this answer, but just in case, KDE's
Folder View widget should get you what you want. You can use four of
them to cut the desktop into quadrants, and you can sort the views by
name, size, type, or date.
