From: Transmuted on 27 Mar 2010 15:41 Has anyone managed to find a Streaming video Recorder that actually works? I've tried 'Orbit' incl it's Grab++ feature which seems a bit unpredictible most of the time. The variety of You Tube Downloaders I've managed to get from this group ;some function....Some Don't! What I'm after is a generic recorder that will capture most video streams like features shown on local TV Channels relayed via the Internet. Am I expecting too much here or does such a specimen exist? Any help greatly Appreciated.

Applian Replay Catcher will capture streamed content but it is payware (I got it through TrialPay where I opted for something that I don't remember anymore but aborted that trial - I did the trial [inside a virtual machine that got reverted to a baseline snapshot] and got RMC for free; just pick a trial that you feel you easy discard or terminate). Camtasia isn't a stream capture utility. It is a screen recording utility. You can mark the area on your screen that you want to capture. While Camtasia is payware, Camstudio is free (http://camstudio.org/). However, when recording the screen, any jerkiness in playback of the video will be recorded and show up in the captured video, too. Whatever you see when looking at your screen is what you'll see in playback of the screen capture. A stream capture utility won't show any jerkiness because you are playing the content locally without any throttling by the stream source or network traffic to interfere with delivery and play of the streamed source. Bear mentioned StreamTransport which is free and works with Hulu. According to other users, it works with other tube sites and stream sources. I had problems with its UI which supposedly got addressed in a beta release but I haven't had time nor inclination to re-trial it. I'm using a higher DPI setting for my LCD monitor with high resolution to compensate for objects getting smaller (especially text). The higher DPI allows for sharper or better focused objects due to using more pixels for the same object. As native hardware resolution goes up for LCD monitors, the DPI should also go up to make use of that increased resolution to keep objects the same size but make them sharper. Letting objects decrease in size with increased resolution means you wasted your money on a higher resolution monitor. StreamTransport was not a DPI-aware program but they say a newer version will become available (and a beta is available if you ask about it in their forum, or just look for my post to get the RapidShare link) which fixes the problem of the disappearing buttons - and without the Download button there is no way to capture the stream source. If you haven't changed from the default of 96 DPI then their 1.02 UI will work. If you upped the DPI to make use of increased hardware resolution so objects and text are sharper then you'll need to get their beta DPI-aware version (I don't know if they really made the program DPI-aware or just moved the buttons to the left side inside of on the right where they get pushed outside the app's window or if they added context menus to the tabled list where you can select Download).
