From: Mike Echo on 12 Jun 2010 08:46 I need to crop some pics taken with a digital camera to fit my mobile phone (360x480). I usually use Irfanview and I know you can drag the selection handles to get the exact size you need. My problem is that I don't know the optimum size for a photo resize so that the selection crops the exact area I want. If I make a selection of 360x480 in Irfanview then as soon as I resize the image so as to fit a person (or their face) exactly in the selection , the selection area disappears. Is there a viewer that will keep a static selection area while I resize the whole image so that I can make the desired area fit into my selection? I hope what I am trying to do is clear. TIA. R.

Using Irfanview hold down the CTRL key while resizing the selection so that it maintains the ratio while resizing. To move the selection, press the right mouse button inside the area then drag. Edit->Crop selection.

I don't know of anything that has a built in function a you describe but use an image editor, set up a grid to required dimensions then you have a target to aim for before cropping. This is how I would do it in gimp, but apply the principals to your favourite editor. http://rapidshare.com/files/398204572/scale.avi.html (4 MB divx avi) -- rich

Handy, I didn't know this, thanks. It doesn't address my problem though, so maybe I didn't explain clearly. The annoying thing in Irfanview is that the selection box for a crop takes a bit of effort if you want an *exact* size (if it could remember a default or the last used size that would be good). Now, when I get the selection box to my exact size and then resize the image, the selection box disappears. I am trying to resize an image while the selection box is visible so that I can crop exactly what I want and make a perfect fit. I have done this before but cannot remember what I used. Must be my old age. :-) Thanks for the responses, R.

I'll give it a go. R.
