My guess is that folks build their own PC because it is fun, the rest
are not interested--like my spouse and they buy Dells or Acers or HPs,
etc. the answer to your question is NO. I think that Leo is correct
but, I know that I can build a power PC for less money than I can buy one.

My parents computer failed. It may have been a dell or something like
that. Anyway the case was backwards so one could not use a standard
mother board and of course the operating system is loaded onto the
hard disk with no backup discs. Seriously they can't even send a few
discs in the box? I bought them a proper case and new motherboard/
processor combo. I told them if they want my help not to buy another
boxed pc.

I enjoy being able to customize or install a alternate operating
system. Its worth building your own pc just so you can install windows
and not get the garbage factory software.

I recall hearing this same idea floated for many years.
Although the proposition that folks would not be buying kits anymore did
come true ;-).

Kits sort of went the way of the TRS Model I

I build my own PC so I can narrow everything down to one choice.

Trying to compare two computers makes my head hurt.
