You may be snookered then, the mobile networks like to force you to use
SMTP via their own servers, and the SMTPS providers will require
authentication, if you have a gmail account, enable POP/IMAP/SMTP and
try their server on port 465.

Subscribe to FastMail and make use of their SMTP servers - the server
info is on this page:
http://www.fastmail.fm/help/remote_email_access_server_names_and_ports.html

Though if you can't enter authentication information for an SMTP
server on your S2 phone (as you suggest downthread), this approach
ain't going to work.

By the by I use FastMail for all my email needs (which sounds terribly
precocious, I know!) - it's a pretty powerful and adaptable service.
The most basic subscription that would give you access to their SMTP
servers costs US$4.95 a year, though if you want to use it for more
than that then a Full or Enhanced account would likely be more
appropriate.

There are other paid for SMTP services on offer out there too, but
it's not something I've looked in to for a while now.

I've an E71 on a 3 contract which talks SMTP with Plusnet (non-encrypted)
and Gmail (TLS). ISTR I had it working with Yahoo and ICUK at some
point. All using an APN of three.co.uk.

Not even on an authenticated port?

You'll probably have an internet connection at home so why not use your
mobile to access your ISP's webmail interface and just send email as if you
were in front of your home computer?
