However, there was a lot of talk about the DVD sold in Germany - I found some old discussions where people claimed they could *not* install over Tiger, but on a new formatted volume. So either some local versions in Europe were different, or there was some other glitch on (some) existing Tiger systems that caused a bug. I don't think that it was a hoax, some people really were forced to use a new disk.

Maybe that explains how my copy got on eBay. It came unopened, and if I tried to run it without rebooting, it was preset to German only. And just for the record, I'm not trying to evade any such restrictions. But at the same time, I'm not fond of any such honor systems where a commercial vendor is attempting to get the benefits of various restrictions without actually being prepared to enforce them -- especially when the terms of this honor systems are unclear or imprecise.
