But you can size a partition on a drive, you don't need to dedicate an
entire disk to it.

If you did want to partition that drive and use the other side, then
you only have to go to System Prefs/Time Machine, disable it,
partition, and enable it and point at your chose partition.

Well, at the moment it's about to be just one volume. Disk Utility is
in the process of 'Modifying Partition Map', and it's been going for 15
minutes already. Hope that's ok and not too long. (300gig drive)

Has it finished now? It Doesn't sound good - disk utility
partitions+formats a terabyte drive here in about a minute. That was
SATA rather than external, but I wouldn't expect that to make much
difference.

Yes, done now. It may have taken a while (and maybe <15m NICTTOI)
because I had deleted a lot of files from the deleted volume first, but
maybe it needed to, er, do something about that.
