Sounds like some of the ugly issues that bothered me on occasion
with TuxOnIce...did you run the series of tests suggested (as I
recall) on the TuXOnIce website? There were serious issues that
could arise if the saved image was somehow incompatible with the
current running kernel -- real bad, complete lockups and corrupted
file systems were possible. Again, lots of warnings to this effect
on the TuxOnIce website.

Get those freeze ups with suspend to memory. No image involved at all.
It used to work, but these days I just can't do it (safely).

Yup, sort of parallels my experience with TuxOnIce. The PM tools have
really matured a lot with the more recent kernels, so I found I didn't
need the extra bits that TuxOnIce offered. I currently have no problems
suspending (to RAM) or hibernating (to disk) my Dell D820, using the
KDE klaptop widget as a front-end to the process. The ACPI stuff
"just works" (such as closing the lid to cause a suspend).

Of course, you may be having some hardware-specific problems that
I'm not seeing with my Dell -- perhaps some RAM issues? Maybe
a memtest is in order...

It does come up fine. It just locks up after a short while. Or it
doesn't. Though mostly it's the first.
