Try using Disk Utility to repair the permissions on the disk.

I found a way to fix it. I had to tell Software Update to download only
the update (not install). After it finished redownloading from scratch
and opened up the Finder's download location, then I ran the update and
that worked.

I highly doubt mine was permissions. It was only a few hours old for Mac
OS X 10.5 and MacBook Pro. How can they be corrupted so fast/soon? :)

Yeah, I told Software Update to redownload it but DON'T run it. That

It could be a corrupt or malformed receipt in /Library/Receipts.

OK, Mac OS X newbie from Windows and Linux world, and experiences with
computers for decades. What are receipts in there? Did old Mac OS X 10.2
have these too because I never saw those before.
