From: Ant on 13 Sep 2008 05:28 Hello. I am trying to update a client's brand new MacBook Pro with all updates. However, one seems to be stuck. After downloading the 67.75 MB QT v7.5.5 update, it fails to install with the Software Updates saying "Downloading 1 item. The update 'QuickTime' can't be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges. The installer has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder." I don't see it in my empty trash can and rerunning Software Update gives me the same darn error. And yes, I am using an administrator level account and had no problems with the rest of 500+ MB of updates. The laptop/notebook and OS are only a few hours old! :( I am not sure if this is related, but I did have a very short disconnection on my unstable cable modem service. My download didn't resume after being reconnected, so I had to stop my stuck download and resume. Thank you in advance. :) -- "The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer." --Proverbs 30:25 (Bible) /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Phil/Ant @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org (Personal Web Site) | |o o| | Ant's Quality Foraged Links (AQFL): http://aqfl.net \ _ / Remove ANT from e-mail address: philpi(a)earthlink.netANT ( ) or ANTant(a)zimage.com Ant is currently not listening to any songs on his home computer.

Almost all updates available from Software Update can be downloaded from <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads> The QuickTime 7.5.5 update for Leopard is available here: <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime755forleopard.html> or more directly: <http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download> Downloading this will give you a .dmg file (disk image). To install it, double-click the downloaded file, which will mount the disk image. It contains an installer package (icon looks like an orange cardboard box). Double-click that, and it will launch Installer. Follow the prompts and enter the admin user's password when prompted. It will need to restart when it finishes installing. You can delete the disk image once it has been installed. -- David Empson dempson(a)actrix.gen.nz

I'm not the original poster, but I had problems with this one too. So I did what you suggested and downloaded the dmg. It too failed to work. The error was something like 'failed verification' In my first attempt to get this via software download, it and iTunes8(?) were there and installed, but on reboot, the dock was invisible and no amount of fiddling would correct that. Then the machine crashed and wouldn't boot. Fortunately I had done a complete backup a few days before on that machine and didn't lose anything. 3 cycles of attempts always produced a crash and no reboot would work. This is on a G5 Powermac. I've not gotten neither QT nor iTunes8 since the last restore and won't until someone can give me a clue as to what is going on.

This is important before any software update, but especially with QT. And, even more so for versions released in conjunction with new hardware (like ipods). Billy Y.. |
