Just in case anyone is still watching this thread, I thought I would give an
update.

I finally received the modem I bought off of ebay. The box pictured stated
it is a "3Com Courier V.Everything model 3453" modem, new in the box. It did
indeed appear to be new, but it has the US Robotics name all over it and not
the 3Com name. It is model number 3CP3453, which is probably the model made
around the time 3Com bought USR.

My client has two of their customers who cannot fax to the MultiTech
MultiModem II MT5600BA-V92 modem on their Microsoft SBS 2003 server (Dell
PowerEdge 2800). I had both of those customers try to send a fax to my
IBM-clone server running SBS 2003 with an internal MultiTech MT5634ZPX-PCI
modem, and both failed.

Some others (Crina Li, Harry B, etc) have recommended using a 3Com (US
Robotics) Courier V.Everything modem that they claim will answer just about
anything that calls. So, I bought a "3Com Courier V.Everything model 3453"
off of ebay and hooked it up to my server, then had the two problem
customers try their faxes again. I received test faxes from both of those
customers, while the test faxes they sent to my client's MultiModem II
failed a few minutes later. I had one of them send again just to see if it
was a fluke, and the fax was received perfectly.

I am still trying to find out what brand of modem is used by one of those
senders. The other one said they have a US Robotics Sportster modem on their
server. Neither my client's MT5600BA-V92 nor my MT5634ZPX-PCI modem will
answer a fax from the US Robotics Sportster modem, but the 3Com Courier
V.Everything modem does answer it.

And yes, all speed settings on both modems were the same: 19200 all around.

Problem solved. Now to see if MultiTech willl refund my money. It is too
late to return it to Ingram Micro.
