From: Gregg Hill on
Hello!

I set up a client's SBS 2003 Standard SP1 server to receive faxes via the
Microsoft fax service. We are using a MultiTech MT5600BA-V92 MultiModem II
external modem http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemII/
connected to a Digi Neo2 2-port serial adapter
http://www.digi.com/pdf/prd_msc_digineo.pdf that is installed in a Dell
PowerEdge 2800 server. We are using the built-in fax service rather than GFi
FAXmaker or other software. They get several inbound fax failures a day. The
modem is set to answer after two rings. All outbound faxes work normally.

I believe the problem is either the modem port speed (started at 115200, now
19200) or perhaps some special initialization string is needed to
communicate with the problem systems. The client's line does not have Caller
ID yet, so I do not know all the inbound numbers that have problems. Even
when I had the modem set to 115200, I could receive from old fax machines. I
am trying to figure out the failing systems so I know what they are using to
send faxes to my client. One of their clients uses a fax modem and server to
send faxes, and their faxes always fail to receive. If that company sends
from their manual fax machine, the fax is received normally. Their IT guy
claims to know what the problem is, but he has been very unresponsive, not
answering calls or emails. I cannot even find out what modem they use. We
are working on getting some information from him.

Failed fax times so far today, some of which are probably just the sending
fax retrying:

7:21:55AM (Pacific Time)
7:26:43AM
7:27:28AM
7:33:02AM
8:03:34AM
8:35:43AM
9:06:23AM
9:25:17AM

I have enclosed the text from several logs, separated with asterisks. If
anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Thank you very much for your time.

Gregg Hill

Hi Gregg,

Thanks for your posting in SBS newsgroup.

According to your post, I understand that some faxes are not received
completely and some times, there are event id 32092 messages. If I have
misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Firstly I have checked your modem, it is not in Microsoft HCL list. The
problem may be caused by the modem. Currently please try the following
steps to see how thing goes:

1. Reduce the baud rate of the incoming fax modem and see how it goes.

1) Open My Computer -> Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options.
2) On the Modems tab, select your modem from the list and click Properties.
3) On the Advanced tab, click Change Default Preferences.
4) The Port speed is 115200 by default; change it to 9600 and see how it
goes.

2. Try turning off compression. To do this, repeat steps 1) - 3) above, and
then change Compression to Disabled.
3. Install the last driver for the modem and check if the issue persists.

Related information:

You cannot receive some faxes and Event ID 32091 and Event ID 32092 are

Crina,

I see that answer a lot from Microsoft, i.e., "your modem is not on the
HCL." This modem is recommended by many individuals in this group, and it is
the only brand of modem recommended by GFi for use with their FAXmaker
software. Even though I do not use the modem with GFi FAXmaker, it should
work fine with SBS 2003's fax service.

Are there any external fax modems that actually made it onto the HCL? What
about this one:
http://www.usr.com/products/business/business-product.asp?sku=USR3453B ? It
is the replacement for the US Robotics Courier V.Everything you have
recommended before, which is not made by 3Com as you previously stated, but
is made by US Robotics. See your thread here:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/browse_thread/thread/312c71342eabef22/c2f499a5b223cc24?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=en#c2f499a5b223cc24

I will follow your suggestions. One question, though. Would it be best to
use the manufacturer's driver, or a generic fax modem driver from Microsoft?

From: Gregg Hill on
Crina,

What about my questions regarding modems?

The modem you have recommended previously (See your thread here:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/browse_thread/thread/312c71342eabef22/c2f499a5b223cc24?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=en#c2f499a5b223cc24)
is the 3Com Courier V.Everything, which was initially made by 3Com, then by
US Robotics, with retail packaging stating "3Com US Robotics Courier
V.Everything 56K Analog Corporate Modem." It is now made by US Robotics, and
has been replaced by the US Robotics Courier? 56K* V.92 Business Modem found
here http://www.usr.com/products/business/business-product.asp?sku=USR3453B.

Are you still recommending that modem? I never could find it on the HCL.

Gregg Hill
