Next: Stopping Windows Update auto reboot
From: canswp on 24 Nov 2009 22:17 Re: Updates KN973687 and KN976098 Running: Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 I click the Update icon on my taskbar and the download appears to start but then I get a message saying they failed to install. No error number. I tried to get them from the Update website but that page just seems to hang up. Or maybe I am too impatient, but I wait 5 minutes and it is still searching.
From: canswp on 24 Nov 2009 22:30 Those Updates should be KB---sorry. From: MowGreen on 25 Nov 2009 19:32 Try another attempt at updating by clicking the Windows Update shortcut on the Start Menu, please. When/if it fails, close Internet Explorer. Open the WindowsUpdate.log and scroll all the way to the bottom. Please copy and paste the **last** 50 or so lines into your reply: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 MowGreen =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== banthecheck.com "Security updates should *never* have *non-security content* prechecked" canswp wrote: > Re: Updates KN973687 and KN976098 > > Running: Windows XP Media Center Edition > Version 2002 > Service Pack 3 > > I click the Update icon on my taskbar and the download appears to start but > then I get a message saying they failed to install. From: canswp on 28 Nov 2009 18:40 Nothing happens when I try the Shortcut in the start menu. No page checking for updates comes up. The update icon keeps returning to my taskbar and I do try to install it but always with a failure. When trying to run windowsupdate.log I get a message saying "Windows cannot open this file" , then directing me to a site to look up a program to open it. There it says "Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will help you find software needed to open your file. File Type: Unknown Description: Windows does not recognize this file type. You may search the following Web site for related software and information: Search the web " I'm starting to think something is messed up.... <kibbitz> There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection! NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help! Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted software), and adware. https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1 Also available via... Consumer Security Support home page https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/ Otherwise... 1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it. 2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm 2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm 3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs in an appropriate forum, not here. Checking for/Help with Hijackware: • http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm • http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html • http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm • http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware **Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5, http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup, http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.** If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop. canswp wrote: > Nothing happens when I try the Shortcut in the start menu.
