From: Rob S on 16 Jul 2008 06:19 Can you do it? My experience is that 2008 retail CALs won't work on a 2003 terminal server, despite several people stating that it will. Can anyone shed some light on this (I get "license code not recognized" trying to enter a valid CAL) thanks -Rob robatwork at mail dot com

You won't, AFAIK, be able to reverse it later, though.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

It's certainly allowed, as documented here: Windows Server 2008 Downgrade Rights http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/downgrade- rights.aspx The best thing you can do is to use the "telephone method" when you install the TS CALs on the Licensing Server, i.e. phone the Clearinghouse. _________________________________________________________ Vera Noest MCSE, CCEA, Microsoft MVP - Terminal Server TS troubleshooting: http://ts.veranoest.net ___ please respond in newsgroup, NOT by private email ___

But for the 2003 TS CALs (used on a W2K server), there was no automatic upgrade. It means that you have to phone the Clearinghouse when you upgrade to get a new license pack. _________________________________________________________ Vera Noest MCSE, CCEA, Microsoft MVP - Terminal Server TS troubleshooting: http://ts.veranoest.net ___ please respond in newsgroup, NOT by private email ___
