I wonder if EasyFind has improved on Snow too (if it is even available for it) - recall, I got sensible results with it on " 55% " but not on "55%" on Tiger. I conducted tests on the desktop folder where I knew in advance what was there in respect to this "55%" -- dorayme

I could not find help on this *particular question* in the help files on Tiger? Maybe I should try Spotlight? <g> The only way I know that the OP can find what he wants *in Tiger*, assuming that the "55%" has spaces either side, is to search for " 55% " in the free software EasyFind. Tiger is very much present and working to generate enough of a chunk of stuff in the world to let its owners earn a living. -- dorayme

Thank you for all the comments. It looks as though the behaviour of Spotlight may depend fairly closely on the OS version. It remains unplumbed! But EasyFind 4.5 did the job without any quotes. And on a more difficult search, for what I really wanted ( 55% [four characters: * the-English-pound-currency-symbol * 5 * 5 * the percent-symbol ] ), EasyFind found precisely the four instances I knew about, found no others (that I had very much hoped would be there), and didn't report any partial match. Splendidly specific. Again, thanks for the pointers ... -- Hylton
