Hi there,

I am currently having a problem with very slow opening of Word files from
within My Documents, which started a few weeks ago.

When I double click on the file icon in a folder, there is a delay of about
1-2 minutes before anything happens. Eventually Word opens (with a blank
screen), and after another minute the file loads. During this time it seems
like nothing is going on (no sound of the hard drive whirring or anything),
and if you try to do anything else within My Documents you get a "not
responding" message.

The same file opens fine (instantaneously) if you choose File Open from
within Word itself, so it seems to be more of a My Documents problem than
Word itself.

Does anyone have any ideas/advice?

I am running XP (Service Pack 3), and Office 2003 Professional. My PC is
standalone (ie no network drives attached). I have run antivirus and spyware
programs, and nothing has come up. I have also tried Detect and Repair
within Office, and have reinstalled Office, but the problem is still there.

I see from a web search people sometimes suggest altering DDE settings
within Word (not sure what that means!), but with mixed results, so I'm
reluctant to try that without further advice!

Any help appreciated!

Louise

Hi Louise898, this Could be a problem of your computer being slow and backed
up with files. Try Disk cleanup and Disk Defragment and let these run
overnight and what these programs will do is help your system run faster and
more efficient. This website will help you with these steps.
