This is based on supposition, mostly: Virgin have recently changed to offering 'better' mobile coverage and WiFi on the Pendolini. I would guess this is by using one of the "moovbox" type services. It may well be that the friend is now getting one of the picocells on the train and, for some reason, that isn't offering the APN he wants or it is deliberately set up to encourage WiFi use first.
