Skype from a Three handset does not use VOIP over the data aspect of
the 3G network. The skype client is customised to make a phone call to
a dedicated number provided by Three, effectively a proxy.

I can confirm. I live miles from any 3G coverage but can use Skype on my
S2 handset. The call register on the phone reports an 07838 333nnn number
for incoming calls described as "IM call".

The delay when talking to another S2 user (just for testing purposes as
one would normally use 3-to-3 calls) can be disconcerting.

I wrote all about it in <news:6cn*lqs+s(a)news.chiark.greenend.org.uk>. Since
Google is being broken and not finding that, you can also find it here:

http://www.markettos.org.uk/telecoms/three-skype-iskoot.txt

(what I don't mention is the basics... essentially the client uses the data
channel to tell the Three/iSkoot server what to do with the other end of the
call, then initiates a GSM voice call to a number supplied in the packet
exchange. I now have iSkoot working on Android x86 but, having no radio, I
don't have a voice channel for it to call out. Which happened to be the
whole motivation for this thread :)
