After spending hours and hours researching the availability of free
PDF writers, I finally decided on PrimoPDF. After I downloaded and
installed it, only then did I discover by reading the PDF user guide
that was in the working directory, that PrimoPDF requires ".NET
Framework" to run. Sure enough, when I tried to print to the PrimoPDF
virtual printer, it said "This software requires the .NET Framework
2.0 or higher. Please install the .NET Framework and run this software
again."

I was quite annoyed at this because during my research (including many
hours spent reading postings on this newsgroup), I came across no
mention of the .NET Framework requirement. Even when I visited the
PrimoPDF homepage, I did not notice any mention of the .NET Framework
requirement. I don't know whether this was an oversight or deliberate,
but I think it's rather irresponsible for them not to mention it in
the specifications.

Anyway, I'm not inclined to install .NET Framework, not only because
it would consume another 90MB (or more) of space from the hard-drive
but also because installing yet another subsystem would only unleash
another potential can of worms causing God-knows-what processes to run
in the background and slow the computer down even more.

At this point, some simplistic person would probably say "If you don't
plan to install .NET Framework and can't run PrimoPDF without it, then
why don't you just uninstall PrimoPDF?". Well, it's not that simple.
Uninstalling an application is not without risk, and can conceivably
cause collateral damage to essential drivers. There have been cases
where I installed a program that seemed promising only to be
disappointed, and because it didn't have that much of a footprint I
decided just to leave it there without uninstalling it.

The footprint size of PrimoPDF is 47MB. (I jotted down the "bytes
left" before and after the installation, and the difference was 47MB).
47MB is an amount that's not insignificant but not huge either, so I
wouldn't feel too bad about 47MB wasted.

* What are your thoughts on this?

* Have any of you uninstalled PrimoPDF and encountered complications?
or did it go without problems?

* What would you do if you were in this situation?
