You can read the Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll. Stoll is a good writer and he tells his story of how one fine day he decided to find out what were those few unpaid for minutes on users's accounts at his university. Those computers are not the ones where critical data -- for launching nuclear washeads, for exemple -- is stored but they can provide some information on the kind of research the army is into.
