My thinking was that it was a computer / Internet / Macintosh related problem and that it would be best to ask here... Specifically; i was thinking that i could simply buy the cable to connect the plug that is on the side of my macbook to it, as they seem to be of the same type... But THEN... What else would be needed to make it work. i have a very high degree of confidence that the library staff would be of NO help whatsoever, While; If this did look familiar to you, You would know exactly what the correct reply would be. ??? Thanx!

Some digital telephone systems also use that kind of connection. Look around for computers and telephones, and see how each is connected to their network. Fred

So ask them to direct you to the staff person who knows. *Somebody* in the library will know. Perhaps it is a free internet hookup. Perhaps they've installed the outlets but the internet won't be hooked up until they get the funding next year. Nobody here on Usenet can reply with a definitive answer. Keep asking around the library until you get to the IT department or whoever is in charge of those terminals. Don't give up after asking only the librarian. -- K. Lang may your lum reek.

It looks like the same at my work place. D for Data, V for Voice/Phone. "IF" it is like my work place you will not get them to work. Every room has these plugs and they are over 300 rooms. The IT personnel will have to validate the Voice/Data connections with their servers (reason for the port numbers). The library staff will probably not know. If the library needs more computers and phone lines the IT personnel will plug in the computers or multi/phones into the those empty unused sockets and validate them with their servers. -- Enjoy Life...
