If I doing a word search, using "find", how can I back up one to avoid going
throught the remainder of the document?

Click the 'More button' in the Find dialog and change the search from All to
Up.

After you have used the Find dialog, the browse arrows at the bottom of the
vertical scroll bar become Next Find/GoTo and Previous Find/GoTo. Use the
latter (the up arrows).
