I recommend plugging into a USB port if you plan to do any serious
test that does not require being outdoors. You mentioned a survey pac,
so this probably does not help much. However, I always plug my HP50G
in when working inside.

The ROM (operating system) and display screen size of the HP-50 is the
same as the HP-49, so any software written for the -49g should run
also on the -50g.
The ability of the -50g to be powered from a USB cable even with NO
batteries installed is a bonus. If you buy a 50g by mail order, say
from Amazon, be sure to check the ROM version. If it is less than
2.15, download the update ROM image and install it. My -50g came with
ROM 2.09 and I discovered that the DISPXY command could not write text
strings to Row 9 or 10 of the screen, a glitch that was fixed in 2.15
among other issues.

Also, the -50g can only accept SD cards up to 2 gb. Don't try to use
SDHC cards (4 gb, 8 gb, etc); they won't work as the HP-50g can only
read SD cards with the FAT-16 filesystem, and SDHC uses FAT-32.

I really like my HP-50g. at US$115 from Amazon.com, it is by far the
most powerful programmable calculator for the (relatively) cheapest
retail price I have ever owned. One other item, if you frequently run
large, complex programs on the -50g, you might want to stash a spare
set of batteries in the case. The cost of that powerful ARM CPU is it
makes the -50g pretty "thirsty" in terms of how quickly it can draw
down batteries, especially NIMH AAA rechargeables if you use those. I
have had a set of alkalines last only three weeks while I was beta
testing a SurveyPac application. I recommand you do any such testing
with the calculator running off USB power if possible. Or do as much
testing and debugging as possible in Debug4X on your PC before
uploading the program to the calc.

SDHC and SDXC are not supported, true
BUT
the limitation to FAT16 is NOT
You can use FAT32, but tyhen you can't do ROM upgrade

How much Flash do you need?
32MB is sufficient...
so you can use any old SD you can find
I have used my old Nokia 9110 Communicator 8MB MMC card
Yes, also old MMC cards will do!
