I'm using an iMac G4 10.4.11 and iTunes v9.0.2.

I store all of my music, my movies, and my photographs in three
similarly named folders. This is a carryover from my pre-OS X Mac days.
I started using iPhoto and iMovie somewhere around 10.2. I want to
eliminate duplication and free some hard drive storage space.

Can I place an alias of the Music folder inside of Music/iTunes/iTunes
Media/Music, or does iTunes require that the files themselves reside in
this location? Similarly, can I place an alias of the Movie folder
inside of Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies?

I see that iPhoto v.8.1.1 does not create duplicates of the photographs
(unless you select this in Preferences) as does iPhoto v5.0.4.

Thank you.

I operated older versions of iTunes with an alias in place of the Music
folder in that specific location, and it worked fine. The alias pointed
into my Mac OS 9 Documents/iTunes folder, which is where iTunes stored
its music under Mac OS 9. I had the same music accessible when I booted
into Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.

Ancient history now.

Never tried but I expect it will also work fine.

that works, or just relocate the library to wherever you want in
preferences. also, if copying songs to the library is disabled, the
songs can be scattered anywhere and itunes will still track their
location.

same with itunes. that's been in there for a very long time, perhaps
since the beginning.
