I can warmly recommend LiteStep. Fully tweakable with functionality
available in module DLL's: hardware monitoring, virtual desktops, command
line widgets, winamp controllers, systray & taskbar modules...
All sorts of user themes available at http://www.litestep.net, if you don't
have the time to start tweaking yourself.
Downloadable at http://lsdev.org/

To elaborate, I am after an application(s) which would remove all
resemblance of Windows task bar in lieu of a more polished and modern
looking shell. Litestep and Geoshell look like the ticket, I was
especially impressed with BBLean and Xoblite a year or so ago but
development has pretty much stopped on these products.

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far, It looks like I have some
installing to do.
