And last but not least..... Exact Windows 16 bits version (using btrieve) i must run it in Windows XP mode. It works great. Since i can first use all 8gb of my memory, i don't notice Windows XP mode running. 4 gb is not really 4gb, but 3gb since the last gb can't be used by a 32bits os. So the 64bits os is no problem, this means my laptop i have 8gb-3gb = 5gb more to use.... And yes, it is virtual pc, but that is no problem. Even VMWARE workstation supports this mode and can import the xp "session". Alwin
From: Geoff Schaller on 19 Dec 2009 18:23 Thankyou Alwin, it is nice to see some confirmation of this. We have some clubs who use our software that is replacing an old DOS system (also using BTrieve) and whereas the DOS app did have issues with Vista, it didn't on W7. Unless the DOS app is doing something extremely low level (and something probably inadvisable for even a 16 bit OS) I don't see why it cannot run in the XP mode. Well, I am glad to hear that Micro$haft lied when they said that they do not support 16 bit with their 64 bit OS, and have been telling their customers that it can't be done. It doesn't work on mine... maybe I did not hold my tongue just right. > 4 gb is not really 4gb, but 3gb since the > last gb can't be used by a 32bits os. No. Intel architecture is paged. A 32-bit OS can access more than 3 or 4 Gb. M$ decided not to support it, for whatever reason (easier, less effort, more security, whatever). > So the 64bits os is no problem, this means > my laptop i have 8gb-3gb = 5gb more to use.... > > And yes, it is virtual pc, but that is no > problem. From: Geoff Schaller on 19 Dec 2009 22:05 Dave, That is not true. Microsoft quite clearly say they support DOS apps through XP Mode. It's on their website. What they do say (which is correct) is that they do not support running 16 bit apps natively on their 64 bit processors. I find that entirely reasonable and desirable. With multiple processor systems, with "half" of the installed products not able to use XP mode (only "Pro" and up), and the "Home" folks that are most likely to have older code that they cannot afford to update, I don't share your opinion. Like that amounts to a hill of beans... I am not the author of anything important. David A. Smith |
