Go to the Control Panel, click on User Accounts and turn it off. You'll have
to restart your computer, then install the updates. Once installed, go back
to the Control Panel and turn the User Accounts back on. It has worked for me
every time an Office 2007 update has failed.

Account Controls, restarted, and the updates installed fine first try. again,
thanx.. I'll have to remember that trick.

I don't see a way to turn off user accounts (Win XP sp3). What am I missing?

You're missing the fact that XP doesn't have UAC, and the OP has Vista, and
you hijacked a thread.
