Explain, please. > Was running mcfee, then Norton, now back to mcfee Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly. 1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe 2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar). 3. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot. 4. Now run this McAfee three-step fix: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 NB: After completing Step #1 of this fix (uninstall McAfee), make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled! You're "working without a net" now so don't do ANYTHING else online until you've completed Step #3 of the fix! 5. Manually & repeatedly update the McAfee application until you get a "no more updates" prompt. 6. Open Internet Explorer (only) to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any Critical Security Updates offered (e.g., KB980182; KB979683). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software updates category on the left-hand side of the scan results window, install it to take full advantage of IE8's enhanced security. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 RonRPh wrote: > winver: version 5.5 (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_qfe.90804-1456: seervice Pack 3, > v.5 Mcfee antivirus- updated to current- finds nothing; > have run malware malabytes, defender, and ad-aware > windows firewall > Was running mcfee, then Norton, now back to mcfee ( had to load in an > older > backup when I was playing around with Netframework- let my backup lapse > for > awhile) > Automatic updates enabled. > Did get one sort of error in the update log ( did not know your could do > that) WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId = > {F4B9C883-F4DB-4FB5-B204-3343C11FA021}.100, hr = 8024E001 > 2010-04-23 06:59:48:765 1956 1444 Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate > Installed rule, updateId = {BFE5B177-A086-47A0-B102-097E4FA1F807}.102, hr > = > 8024E001 > Would this mean anything??? <paste> PA Bear [MS MVP] wrote: > Start | Run | WINVER | OK: What's the Build number displayed here? > > Open Add/Remove Programs: What's the KB number of the most recently > installed "Security Update for Windows XP" and what's the Installation > date? > > What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your > subscription current?
